With the nazafat of Al Jame Al Anwar underway, the restoration and revival of Imam HakimAS’s legacy in Anwar was progressing. Syedna Mohammed BurhanuddinRA expressed the hope that the restoration project be complete by the beginning of the 15th century hijri, which was less than 27 months away. The Egyptian president and home minister commented that a project of this size would take 50 years to complete; it would be logistically impossible to achieve such a feat in a short time frame. But time performed the khidmat of Syedna Mohammed BurhanuddinRA and the iftitah of Al Jame Al Anwar took place in Moharram 1401H.
تفكرساعة خيرمن عبادة سنة
RasulallahSAW declares that one saa’at spent in deep and meaningful introspection is of greater value than an entire year’s worth of ibaadat. Time, or saa’at, takes many forms. It can be calculated in terms of years, months, hours, minutes, and seconds, to name a few. What matters most is how we choose to spend our time.
Maulana AliAS spent his every breath in the khidmat of RasulallahSAW, for he was conscientious of the fact that each minute in MaulaSAW’s khidmat is invaluable. Once, RasulallahSAW was resting, receiving revelations from Allah Ta’ala, with his head in Maulana AliAS’s lap. The sun began its descent to the horizon, and the time for asr was coming to an end. Maulana AliAS had not prayed asr yet; he contemplated upon his options: either forego asr or wake RasulallahSAW from his rest. For Amirul MumineenAS,
RasulallahSAW’s khidmat was paramount, and as such, he chose to leave RasulallahSAW undisturbed. When the sun set, RasulallahSAW awoke and asked Maulana AliAS whether he had prayed asr. Upon hearing that Amirul MumineenAS had missed asr, RasulallahSAW beseeched Allah Ta’ala to return the sun to the sky, for Maulana Ali ‘ta’at nu amal ma hata!” The sun reversed course, rose into the sky, and Amirul MumineenAS prayed asr on time.
Maulana AliAS’s tafakkur and the choice he made to remain in RasulallahSAW’s khidmat is clear proof that nothing – not even one namaaz – is ever lost in spending even one second in Maula’s khidmat. Similarly, during Ashara Mubaraka, we forego all worldly obligations in order to ensure that every hour, every second of these nine days are spent doing tafakkur and mourning Imam HusainAS. In devoting ourselves to MaulaTUS’s ta’at and khidmat, we will lose nothing, and the barakat we receive is so great, it is unbeknownst to all but Allah Ta’ala.
On Ashura, as the fateful hour of asr drew to a close, Jibraeel, at Allah Ta’ala’s command, came with a legion of malaaekat, to offer their services to Imam HusainAS. Imam HusainAS, like his father, had two choices. He chose to sacrifice his life in the name of Allah Ta’ala’s happiness and his Nana NabiSAW’s khidmat. He chose to fulfill the promise he made to RasulallahSAW, the promise through which RasulallahSAW found eternal peace. By the same token, Imam HusainAS’s Ahle Bayt and Ashaab sacrificed their lives, the lives of their brothers and sons in the khidmat of Imam HusainAS. Their only tafakkur was HusainAS, HusainAS, HusainAS, HusainAS!
May Allah Ta’ala give us the willpower and strength to continue to put aside everything during these days so that, like Ahle Bayt and Ashaab, our every thought and action is ‘HusainAS, HusainAS, HusainAS!’
