PEARLS OF WISDOM

5th Moharram ul Haraam, 1440H

Zimarmar, during the reign of Do’at Mutlaqeen RA in Yemen, was a great fort. The fort lies atop a high mountain, over 2500 meters above the sea, and is home to a masjid and the quboor mubarak of four Do’at. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA embarked upon a journey to climb up the mountain of Zimarmar during his historical visit to Yemen in 1381 H. The climb was precipitous and treacherous: all of a sudden, a large boulder detached itself from above and came hurtling down. Alarmed, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS, who had accompanied Maula RA, grasped his qadam mubarak. The boulder stopped within a few feet of Burhauddin Maula RA. Maula RA, with characteristic courage, continued the climb up the mountain to Zimarmar.

‘Zimar’ in the Arabic language translates to ‘courageous man.’ Courage – shuja’at – is a virtue. He who is courageous has the strength and integrity to quell his anger and not let it cloud his judgement. Courage gives patience to withstand adversity and to accept the will of Allah.

Anger is an intense emotion evoking hostility and contempt. Eyes turn red with agitation as it wells up within. Incredible courage and patience is required to subdue it. Doing so is tantamount to defeating Iblis. Allah tests our courage through these trials and tribulations.

Amir ul mumineen AS, Asad al Allah- the lion of Allah, exemplifies the courage required to suppress one’s anger. During the Battle of Siffeen, Maulana Ali AS raised his sword to strike an enemy soldier, the latter spat on him. As Maulana Ali AS held back his sword and left him unharmed. The soldier was dumbfounded. He approached Maulana Ali AS and asked why he had been spared, even after his provocation. Maulana Ali AS replied, “I fight for Allah; I will not fight and kill because of anger.” Upon hearing this, the soldier prayed kalemat al-shahadat and became a mumin.

When Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA returned from Yemen, the Zimarmar incident was recounted to Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA. Syedna exclaimed, “Shayateen instigate such turmoil. But for each shaitaan there is an angel who counters and protects.” During today’s waaz mubarak, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS gave us an important life lesson on courage and anger inspiring us to better ourselves and to have the courage and patience to accept and act in accordance with the will of Allah.
